Always test machine-readable codes after cleanup.
QR codes, UPCs, and other barcodes can remain readable after image cleanup, but tiny changes to the pattern can make a code fail. Treat every finished code as something that must be tested.
Why codes need extra attention
A QR code or barcode is not just a picture. Its exact pattern carries data. Sharpening, reconstruction, resizing, compression, or AI-assisted cleanup can alter small edges or blocks even when the code still looks normal to a person.
Before you clean the flyer
If you have access to the original QR code or barcode file, keep it. A clean original code is the safest reference if the code in the flyer needs to be replaced later.
If the code already works in the source artwork, scan it before cleanup so you know what destination or data you expect afterward.
After cleanup
Scan the code directly from the finished file on screen. Then, if the flyer will be printed, test a physical proof at the intended print size before producing a large quantity.
For a QR code, confirm that it opens the exact destination you expect. For a UPC or other barcode, test it with the equipment or app that will actually be used.
If the code does not scan
Do not keep enlarging, sharpening, or editing the damaged code and assume it will become valid. If possible, place the original known-good code back into the finished artwork using a normal image editor.
Size and contrast still matter
A code can be technically correct and still be difficult to scan if it is printed too small, has weak contrast, is distorted, or is placed too close to other design elements. Leave clear space around it and follow the requirements of the code system or printer you are using.
